Since getting my new iPhone 3GS... I have been exploring many of the app offerings and found many that were very useful or just cool. Simplify Media is one of my favorite apps currently. Its not free but the latest version (2) sold for $5.99 is well worth the cost in my opinion. Let me explain...
I have a nice size library of mp3's on my home computer. Many are rips from my 500+ CD collection that I prefer not to carry around anymore. This library is way too large to fit the whole thing on my iPhone with only 16gb of storage so I am left to create playlists of music that I want to include on the iPhone for later listening pleasure. This isn't so bad... 16bg is plenty of room to add most any music or video I may want while away from home but sometimes I get in the mood for a tune that I just didn't think to load on my iPhone. That's where Simplify Media does it's magic by giving me access to my complete music collection (over 70gb) on my computer at home at anytime.
So how does it work? Well, its really simple to setup. You install the app on your iPhone or iPod Touch or UPnP device. Then install the software from their website on your computer. Its supports Mac, Linux and PC currently. It works along side many popular mp3 players including iTunes, Front Row, Winamp, WMP 11 and Rhythmbox sharing your music library through either wifi connection or 3G data connection.
Its also a closed system allowing only users you allow into your private network to share your music files. This helps you avoid any legal matters which are associated with music distribution and streaming. Music can only be streamed and users can't download the files from their remote library however. Buffering may take a second or two for each song streamed but the stream stays consistent without hiccups if user has a good network.
So, if you are like myself and have a huge music collection which you just can't carry around everywhere but you would like to have access through a wireless device... check out Simplify Media.
