Sadly, just recently I lost a drive in my computer. It was a terabyte drive that had 2 partitions, one for photo storage and one for a second operating system I was building up to use. The drive was less than a year old and purchased as a add-on slave to my current drive. So, no loss because it was backed-up right? Well, partially...
I had a backup plan working in which nightly backups from my documents folder, music folder, and photo drive were made to an external 750 gigabyte Maxtor drive connected via firewire. Somewhere down the road, I ran into an issue with a file not wanting to transfer and I cancelled the photo backups until I could decide how to work around the issue. Time passes and life went on as I forgot about my photo backup being off. Now... its looks like I am short on my pics due to my lazy attitude towards the backup plan. I assumed I was safe since the drive was fairly new. It was also a Seagate which are said to be very reliable.
So, lesson learned and now making sure those backups are in place but I am now in need of another drive. Not sure what route I will go. Not interested in another NAS drive after the disappointing Eagle NAS setup I tried. I realize Drobo and other alternatives would be better but they are big bucks too. Probably just going to look for another internal SATA terabyte drive. Take it from me... you need to make sure your backup plan is effective. I am now considering backing up to DVD for photos as well.
